Phillies’ case was equally important. Andrew McCutchen hit the walk-off, running three times at home running under the ninth inning and Philadelphia came back with a clutch 6-5 to beat the visiting Washington Nationals.
The Phillies will now look forward to their third consecutive victory when they host the Nationals in the second of a four-match series on Tuesday.
It was the eighth Phillies victory this season, their biggest in the first 99 games since they combined nine in 1983 when they advanced to the World Series.
Five relievers – Brandon Kintzler, Connor Brogdon, Joseph Alvarado, Hector Neris and Archie Bradley – combined to allow one run in 5 1/3 innings after Spencer Howard gave four runs in 3 2/3 innings. The Phillies will send Matt Moore to the left in the mound on Tuesday. Morell (0-2, 5.79 ERA) is 0-1 with 2.70 ERAs in four sector games (three starts) against National. He threw a pointless inning into a free-kick in Washington on May 13th.
Jean Segura of Philadelphia had two songs on Monday and extended his strike to eight. Rhys Hoskins added a three-run home run, which increased his RBI number to a top 62 team.
The struggling country will hopefully avoid a sixth loss in a row.
Closer Brad Hand has dealt with the money saved in a series of games, including releasing a three-run run to McCutchen. On Sunday in Baltimore, he gave two-inning runs to take a 5-4 defeat. On Monday, the Nationals produced 10 hits and five runs, the running number being the best for the team during the five skid games, but they needed more.
Josh Bell and Josh Harrison met three times in a row in the fourth inning, the first time Washington achieved the game since 2005.
The Nationals will turn to Erick Fedde to try and stop the missing momentum. Fedde (4-7, 4.88 ERA) is 2-5 with 5.77 ERA out of 10 jobs (start nine) against the Phillies, including 0-1 at 8.00 twice earlier this year.
On his recent trip, Fedde received a decision against Miami Marlins on Wednesday after allowing a single, unbeaten run, in six innings. He gave up four hits and a walk when he hit four in a 3-1 loss to Washington in 10 innings.
